The Dojo Kun are the rules by which every karate-ka (karate student) abide.
The purpose of the Dojo Kun is to remind all of the students in the dojo, regardless of their rank, that the physical, mental, and spiritual growth that they enjoy as a by-product of their karate training.
They are all of equal importance and represent what is expected both in and out of the Dojo (training hall).
Hitotsu! Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomoro koto
(Hit-ots! Gin-ka-ku can-say nee sut-o-morrow koto)
One! To strive for perfection of character
(always try to be the best version of yourself)
Hitotsu! Makato no michi o mamoru koto
(Hit-ots! Mak-ato no mee-chee oh mam-o-roo koto)
One! To defend the paths of truth
(Be faithful and trustworthy)
Hitotsu! Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto
(Hit-ots! Dor-ee-o-koo no say-shin oh ya-shin-ow koto)
One! To foster the spirit of effort
(always do your best)
Hitotsu! Reigi o omunsoru koto
(Hit-ots! Ray-gee oh o-mun-so-roo koto)
One! To honour the principles of etiquette
(To behave as is expected of you, be polite)
Hitotsu! Kekki no yu o imashimuru koto
(Hit-ots! Keh-key no you oh i-mash-i-mu-roo koto)
One! To guard against impetuous courage.
(Refrain from violent behavior, don’t put yourself in danger)
